Your cat probably likes watching you shower because your furry friend truly loves you. Cats are incredibly protective of their owners, and they want to keep a watchful eye on them at all times. There likely will be other reasons, but most people agree that it is because cats are protective.

Our experts want to go into a bit more depth on this for you. We have a lot to cover about why cats enjoy watching you in the shower, as well as a few things that you can do to stop the problem from occurring.

Why Does My Cat Watch Me Shower?

Obviously, we cannot say for sure why your cat is watching you in the shower. We can’t read a cat’s mind. Therefore, anything that we do say here is pure guesswork based upon observation. Although, people are fairly confident that these are the likely reasons for all of that cat starring.

Your Cat is Protective of You

While cats do give off the impression that they are solitary animals, they aren’t. They love their owners. They know that you provide for them. Therefore, they are going to be protective of you.

When you are in the shower, your cat may want to ensure that you are OK. They want to keep a protective eye over you, just in case something goes wrong. Obviously, it won’t, but your cat doesn’t know that.

Cats Need Attention

There are some cats that simply can’t fathom the idea of being away from their owners for more than a short amount of time. So, they will follow you just about everywhere you go, and this means that they are going to be following you into the shower.

You will likely already know whether your cat has clingy tendencies because it will stretch way past your bathroom. If your cat is clingy to the point where they feel the need to follow you into the bathroom, then there are some deep underlying issues that you will need to deal with.

The Cat is Fascinated with the Water

Cats can get excited by even the simplest of things. It is not uncommon for cats to be enthralled by the sight of running water in the shower. The cat isn’t really in the bathroom because they are excited to see you. They are in the bathroom because they are excited to see water flowing out of the showerhead.

Your Cat’s Litterbox is in the Bathroom

Due to the unfathomable stench that can often come from a cat’s litterbox, many cat owners will leave their cat’s litterbox in the bathroom.

If the cat’s litterbox is in the bathroom, then they are more prone to being in the bathroom in the first place. A lot of cat owners have noticed that their cat will be running into the bathroom the second it looks like their owner is about to take a shower. This is because the cat knows that if they aren’t in that bathroom, they aren’t going to have access to their litterbox for a long while.

Obviously, your cat may have other reasons for watching you in the shower. However, the vast majority of people agree that these are probably the most likely reasons why it happens.

How Can You Stop a Cat Watching You Shower?

So, now we know the reasons why your cat may be watching you shower, let’s go into a few of the ways that you can prevent it, shall we?

Litterbox Placement

Ideally, you should avoid having the litterbox in the bathroom. If it is in the bathroom, then temporarily move it out of the bathroom when you are about to shower. The cat will just use it at its new location.

Monitor Your Cat’s Bathroom Schedule

Many cats seem to use their litterbox to a fairly strict schedule. A lot of people find that their cats always use the litterbox at the same sort of time. Therefore, try to shower around the cat’s schedule if them staring at you is that much of a problem. We know that it probably doesn’t feel good to have your cat determine your shower activities, but it is one of the best things that you can do if you are bothered that much.

Ignore Your Cat

When you are in the shower, there is a chance that your cat may start to scratch the door, begging to be let inside. Just ignore them. They will stop doing it eventually as they will work out that there is no reward for their behavior. Don’t even punish them. They may like the attention.

Give Your Cat Food

If you are going to head into the shower, why not give your cat some food or treats? It should provide them with enough of a distraction that you can rush into that shower, shutting the door behind you.

Give Them Toys

Toys also work incredibly well. Give your cat their favorite toy before you head into the shower and it should provide them with a decent amount of distraction.

Deal with Clinginess Issues

If your cat has clinginess issues, then you will have to deal with those. Of course, clinginess is a tough problem to fix and can take a huge amount of time. Therefore, we won’t give you a ‘step by step’ here. However, it is important that you start to deal with those clinginess issues as soon as possible. If you let them get out of hand, then it can be tough to fix.

Your cat is likely watching you in the shower because they care about you. Thankfully, dealing with a cat staring at you shouldn’t be that hard of a problem to fix. Keep their litterbox out of the bathroom and ignore them, and you should be able to deal with most problems with ease.
